Are You Tracking Your Gas Mileage? Here’s Why You Should Be!
If there’s one thing on the mind of nearly every driver these days, it’s gas mileage. One of the best ways to lower your fuel consumption is observing the MPG each time you fill up. This can give you insight into how conditions (your speed, how many stops you make, weather, etc.) impact your gas mileage, and make the necessary adjustments to your driving to improve your gas mileage. These are some of the ways you can track your gas mileage:
Let your car do it for you! New Hondas today come equipped with gas mileage trackers in the display screen near the speedometer. This allows you to see in real-time how your driving is impacting your gas mileage. Chances are, you’ll probably lay-off the gas pedal a little when you see how much speeding impacts your gas mileage.
Manually calculate it. If you plan on manually calculating your gas mileage, we recommend keeping a notebook and pen handy in your ride. To manually calculate it, reset your trip meter on your vehicle the next time you get gas. When you go to fill-up next time, write down how many miles you have driven up to that point. Then, see how many gallons of gas it took to fill your vehicle up. Then, divide the number of miles driven by the number of gallons it took to fill up your vehicle. This number is your MPG! You can record the MPG in the notebook and see pattern develop over time.
There’s an app for that! Have you downloaded Fuelly yet? If not, go do so now! It takes all the math and hard work out of the above and creates charts and graphs to help you stay on top of your MPG.
