How to Prep Your Honda For Winter
Here in Colorado, we’re no strangers to winter. In fact, Colorado Springs gets an average of over 44” of snowfall annually. Although we get to enjoy benefits of this weather such as skiing and snowboarding, it is important to be aware of the danger caused by snow. There’s no doubt about it – winter weather has a large impact on driving conditions. Stay prepared this weekend by taking advantage of these tips:
Keep a survival kit in your car
Every car should be equipped with a first aid kit and basic survival necessities but it is important to have supplies specifically for winter months. Your box should include:
- Personal items such as blankets and warm clothes, food (we recommend energy bars), and water.
- Ways to communicate including a battery powered radio, charged cell phone, a flash light, and road flares / reflectors.
- Ways to help get out of the snow, like a bag of material for traction (road salt, cat litter, sand), a shovel, and a windshield scraper.
Make sure your car is running smoothly
During winter, it is important to keep fluids in your vehicle that won’t freeze. Make sure your coolant and antifreeze are at appropriate levels. You should also make sure your windshield wiper fluid won’t freeze on your windshield by using winter products. Finally, use a thinner oil to keep the engine running smoothly.
Make sure your vehicle is equipped
Tire tread is a very important part of vehicle safety, and in winter months can be even more pertinent. Auto supply stores sell a gauge which can measure your tire pressure. Cold weather can lower pressure which affects your steering & handling as well as gas mileage. It is equally important to make sure your tires have enough grip to properly meet the road and handle winter terrain. To check the amount of tread, simply inset a penny into the groves with the head of Lincoln facing you. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, it is recommended that you replace your tires.
