Is It Time to Have Your Oil Changed?
Oil changes are one the most common – and most important – preventative maintenance services you can have done on your car. Can’t remember the last time you had your oil changed? It’s time to change that! Check out these quick facts to get some basic information about oil changes.
- While each and every vehicle is unique, the general consensus is that an older car should get an oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, while newer vehicles can go up to 10,000 miles. Consult your owner’s manual or service advisor for the exact amount.
- Check your vehicle’s oil level every 1,000 miles. It is good to get in the habit of checking oil levels to ensure that there is not a leak. Being aware of a sudden loss of oil can help you avoid costly damage to your engine.
- Adding oil to your car does NOT equal changing the oil. The oil filter needs to be changed and the oil that’s been running in your car needs to be properly disposed. While having a mechanic handle it is best, if you do choose to change your own oil, always consult an expert first.
- Why does it need to be changed? While oil does a lot of things, its most important job is to lubricate the engine and carry heat away from the engine block. As it circulates, it picks up dirt and other debris. If it is not changed, your engine will suffer deterioration. Eventually, it will get so bad that your engine will shut down and have to be replaced.
